The best mental health treatment plan is a plan that is designed for the individual, one that they are able to engage with and subsequently commit to. Complementary and alternative therapies help to balance a treatment path and to expand the options for a individualized care.
The journey to recovery is a very subjective one and different for each person. The best plans, are those designed specifically for each person. Each person responds uniquely to medication and psychotherapy options. The treatment process is a collaboration, where there is give and take of both benefits and side effects. With careful clinical attention, it is very possible to find a balance of therapies, lifestyle changes and support systems so the client can feel empowered in their own progress.
A holistic approach to mental health refers to this balance. A holistic treatment plan takes into consideration the many layers and facets of a person and their life. Depending on their needs, a holistic approach draws from a range of treatment options including medication, psychotherapy and counselling, group therapy, goal setting, habit building, life skills training, nutritional planning and supplementation and the exploration of alternative and experiential therapies.
